Bursitis of the Knee Treatment

Bursitis is caused when there is swelling in one or many small fluid sacs that are known as bursae present in a joint. Bursae act as a cushion and support around the bones and tendons. When swelling is observed, it causes a lot of pain and prevents normal movements of the joint. It can be caused due to any injuries, stress or strenuous use of the joint. Other causes could include infections

Knee specialists suggest any of the following treatments or a combination of-

1. Medication
If you can achieve relief from pain through anti-inflammatory or anti-swelling medicine, they are a great help in relieving side effects or symptoms of knee bursitis. If they do not help, orthopaedics prescribe other medications to reduce pain, swelling and infection. If bursitis continues to stay and there is no positive response to the medication, doctors recommend corticosteroid injections in the affected area for relief.

2. Walking assistance
During the time of healing, doctors assign a protective knee brace or an assistive mechanism like the usage of a cane or crutches to add extra support in movement. Compression sleeves are advised to reduce inflammation and provide support.

3. RICE Method
This is considered to be the best way of getting rid of discomfort and pain. RICE stands for
R- rest
I- ice
C- compression
E- elevation

This is a very simple approach and is a way of improving and reducing the levels of several symptoms.

4. Physical therapy
This treatment includes exercises of various forms to help in the improvement of knee function, this further increases flexibility, the strength of muscles and prevents future injuries. It helps in-

  1. Reduction of pain and inflammation: if similar and repetitive activities have led to knee bursitis, physical therapists try to see your joints and overall condition and then assign activities to begin healing. They might use a variety of methods or machines that use light sound or heat to reduce pain.
  2. Improving endurance: it is important to get your knees functioning back to normal after any injury. Physical therapists come up with a particular program and set of activities to help regain it back so normal practices do not prove to be challenging anymore.

Improving movement and mobility: certain exercises and activities are chosen depending upon each individual’s strengths and level of knee bursitis. In the beginning, there might be the inclusion of passive movement that does not involve you using your knees, therapists assist and perform them for you and with time, you will be able to do them on your own.

5. Surgery
In certain cases, knee bursitis might be chronic, severe or recurring. In such conditions, doctors recommend surgery where the affected Bursa is removed. Surgery is a rare approach and usually, doctors try to observe medication and physical therapy on a more common basis, but in very severe cases, it can help alleviate and eliminate pain.
